The coils convert the low voltage, low current into high voltage, very low current for the spark plugs. In most systems, there are high-voltage wires strung across the engine to the plugs. As temperature degrades the rubber insulation on the high-voltage wires, they eventually begin to short out against the metal parts of the motor. With our system, the wire parts only carry low voltage, so shorts are extremely unlikely. It is a better system overall. (We of course suffer when the ambient engine heat degrades the PTU itself, but that's another story...at least we never have to change spark plug wires. We don't have [high-voltage] spark plug wires!)
